Man United legend blasts manager’s tactics as reason behind goalscoring drought

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has slammed his former club and manager Louis van Gaal for their negative brand of football, according to reports from BBC.

The Red Devils have been a difficult team to beat of late, with Van Gaal’s men in a respectable fourth place only two points off top-of-the-table Manchester City.

However, United have struggled to score on a consistent basis this season with just 15 goals so far, and Scholes, who spent 20 years with the club, has pinpointed the gaffer’s negative tactics as the reason for the side going 247 minutes at home without a goal.

“I think the hardest thing to do is to coach scoring goals, creativity and to have players who are off the cuff,” Scholes said on BBC radio.

“It’s a team you wouldn’t want to play against and it’s probably a team you wouldn’t want to play in either.

“There’s a lack of risk and creativity. It seems he [Van Gaal] doesn’t want players to beat men and score goals – it’s not a team I would have enjoyed playing in.

“The style is not something that Sir Alex Ferguson would have adhered to.”

The ex-England international also went on to back recently maligned striker Wayne Rooney, once again blaming Van Gaal’s negative approach as the cause of his poor form.

“I was at the Manchester derby and I watched him [Rooney] for the first 20 minutes,” he added.

“His movement was brilliant but when he’s playing in that team there’s nobody prepared to pass to him. You’d be tearing your hair out.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy, Teddy Sheringham, Andy Cole couldn’t play in this team.

“You don’t get crosses in the box, [no] midfielders looking for runs. I think it’s a very difficult team to be a centre forward in.”

United have a tricky trip to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace this weekend, before hosting CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford in a Champions League fixture on Tuesday.
